MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT – Annual Competitor Awards & Fundraiser
Apr 8, 2010
INBA is pleased to announce we have created an annual Awards Presentation Brunch the morning after the Australian Titles each year. The Competitor Gala Awards will be an annual event to honour our competitor’s outstanding achievements during the year. The Awards will consist of both contest related achievements such as the Year’s Best Posing Routine, Most Muscular Athlete, and also non-contest accolades, such as Most Positive Sportsperson.
In addition to presenting the Awards, we will be honouring our newly crowned Australian Champions and presenting to the brunch attendees, each Member of INBA Australian Team who will be representing our Nation in the upcoming International Pinnacle events, such as The Natural Olympia.
Significantly, the Gala Awards and Brunch has been created as a Fundraiser for INBA competitors to achieve their goal of representing Australia on any international stage. All proceeds from the Competitor Gala Awards go in our ‘Competition Fund’ to assist competitor’s costs when representing INBA and Australia. We expect the Fund will be capable of paying the international entry fees, drug testing, Australian uniform and items. This could reduce the cost by 0-500 per Australian competitor.
In 2010 the Competitor Gala Awards Brunch & Fundraiser will be held at the University of Victoria (Footscray campus) in a new 400 seat restaurant with fabulous views overlooking the Melbourne Race Course and Maribyrnong River. Sunday October 10th between 9.30am – 12 Noon.
Full details will be posted next month on a new Competitor Awards & Fundraiser page on www.inba.com.au and will detail the Awards, voting system, location and address, breakfast menu and attendees will be able to make bookings online. Ticket price includes an all you-can-eat buffet breakfast and is expected to be .50 (INBA Members) and for Attendees. We anticipate and look forward to this been a significant and richly rewarding annual event for our competitors

The International Natural Bodybuilding Association’s (INBA) decision to impose a two-year sanction on NSW bodybuilder Sam Kassem for the presence and use of a prohibited stimulant was welcomed by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA). ASADA collected an in-competition sample from Mr Kassem on 29 September 2009 following the 2009 NSW Natural Physique Titles at Castle Hill RSL, Sydney. This sample tested positive for the specified stimulant, heptaminol. The INBA imposed a two-year period of ineligibility against Mr Kassem, commencing on 4 March 2010, for the presence and use of heptaminol. Mr Kassem is banned from taking part in recognised sports until midnight on 4 March 2012. Competition results for Mr Kassem from the 2009 NSW Natural Physique Titles will be disqualified. Heptaminol is listed as an S6 Stimulant on the World Anti-Doping Code Prohibited List and is prohibited in-competition. Athletes in possession, using or attempting to use this specified stimulant potentially face serious penalties, including a two-year ban for first offence.

INBA Achievement Medallion
Mar 4, 2010
INBA Australia commissioned the striking of an exclusive gold Achievement Medallion for our competitors who take up the challenge of competing, but do not place Top 3. The double-sided Achievement Medallion recognises that to make it on-stage is a remarkable accomplishment. Not many people have the strength to attempt or succeed in completing the ultimate physical challenge - to endure the 24/7 rigours of contest preparation, diet, training and also learn the mind field of knowledge to take your body to new boundaries. INBA Presidents wanted something special to recognise their competitors feat of making it all the way to “contest day”. Plus to highlight that placing outside Top 3 does not reflect what you have achieved – sometimes those who finish last have fulfilled the biggest personal challenge. Like finishing a marathon, to compete on stage deserves its credit - the INBA Achievement Medallion.

Pictured: Australian competitors at the Natural Olympia host hotel. A history defining 4-day Natural Olympia on the Gold Coast last November which attracted 352 competitors from 20 countries completed an extraordinary year on multiple levels for INBA. The 2009 Natural Olympia in Australia was the platform that allowed INBA to assemble Australia’s largest National team of bodybuilders comprising of 200 members competing for Australia at the prestigious International event. Moreover, the INBA Victorian Titles created a new Victorian bodybuilding record attracting 130 competitors for the INBA Big V promoted by Australia’s Natural Olympia champion, Warren Clampit. Warren now has the INBA QLD State record of 152 competitors as his new goal. The Big V Show was also the unveiling of our new award for our best competitors; the awe-inspiring 150cm (5 ft) INBA Champion’s Sword.

ASADA have the capability to store selected urine and blood samples from INBA competitors in their deep-freeze facility, called the Tank, for up to eight years. With this capability, we can retrospectively analyse samples using advances in testing technology to detect prohibited substances (such as human growth hormone) and methods, and enforce sanctions against athletes who return a positive test. The Tank is at the National Measurement Institute, a WADA-accredited laboratory. INBA can serve sanctions up to eight years after the competitor has competed.

After a successful inclusion at the Gold Coast Natural Olympia last November, INBA will be including Male SportsModel at some Australian events in 2010. The Melbourne Titles on April 17 will be the first domestic event to offer both Male and Female SportsModel divisions. Male SportsModel has two rounds, (1) Beach Wear which may be swim wear or beach shorts with appropriate footwear, and (2) Sports (fitness/gym) wear with runners. There should be no physique poses/stances at any time – we are looking for a model. The judging criterion is based on the body, appearance, stature, and physical symmetry. ASADA Drug Test findings recently published show INBA is the most successful drug detection sporting body in Australia. During the 2008-09 financial year ASADA conducted 7,498 tests over 100 sports resulting in 29 drug test violations been registered. Of those 29 positive tests involving 12 sports, INBA finished at the top of the sporting table recording 10 positives (35%) from our testing. Astounding if you consider that INBA competitors accounted for just 1% of the testing pool. It beggars belief that drug-using bodybuilders continue to line up to be ousted by INBA, when they can compete in other bodybuilding contests with no drug testing.

At the NSW State Titles on Sunday 27th September 2009, in a world first for Natural bodybuilding, five INBA competitors were requested by to provide blood samples to be analysed. Twelve more blood tests were taken at the Australian Titles. Blood has the advantage of been able to detect growth hormone and insulin. Whereas urine testing is unable to detect GH at this point in time. Several INBA competitors have now been required to submit to both urine and blood testing in what is the most advanced and comprehensive screening for drug-use available in the world today. Blood samples are taken by an ASADA nurse at our events. A second major advantage blood testing offers INBA is the sample collection process is completed in moments and doesn’t require dehydrated competitors to sit at the venue for hours after a contest attempting to rehydrate to supply a urine sample.

The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) welcomed the decision of the
International Natural Bodybuilding Association (INBA) to impose a two-year sports ban on
bodybuilder Isaac Hall for a failure to comply with a request to provide a sample. On 10 June 2009, ASADA approached Mr Hall out-of-competition (6am at home) and requested him to provide a sample for testing purposes. Mr Hall refused to participate in the sample collection process after been warned by the collection official of the consequences. Two days after failing to comply with a request to provide a sample, Mr Hall officially retired from sporting competition. INBA has imposed a two-year WADA enforced period of ineligibility against Mr Hall for the sample collection failure. Due to his retirement, Mr Hall’s period of ineligibility will not commence until he rejoins a sport with a compliant World Anti-Doping Code policy. Until Mr Hall’s sanction of two years is served, he is banned from taking part in any national and international sports that have adopted the World Anti-Doping Code. In additional of the two year WADA ban, INBA imposed an INBA Life sanction under its Misconduct Ruling. INBA has a zero tolerance attitude towards violations of its anti-doping policy. Conducting drug testing is the corner stone of upholding the principle of Natural Bodybuilding, making refusing a drug test the ‘golden violation’. If you compete with INBA you must accept you are liable to be tested at any time, and any number of times, during your membership. Mr Hall had previously been drug tested both in and out-of-competition.

Oct 21, 2009
352 entrants representing 20 Countries in the 2009 INBA Natural Olympia turned the Gold Coast (Australia) event into a history defining 4-days for Natural Bodybuilding. The physiques, personalities, quality and contest condition of each drug-free athlete competing created an awesome experience for everyone involved and an "event storm" on the Natural Olympia day. Not were just the Top 3 incredible, the top dozen competitors, were awe-inspiring to watch on stage. With line-ups of up to 28 per division, never in 30 years of involvement in the sport of bodybuilding have I witnessed such a stunning event and competitors. Every part of the 4-days was awesome. Starting with 210 minutes of registration on Thursday, where 352 entrants were registered, music and posing instructions taken, contest number and ID Passport handed out, questions answered, uniforms purchased, tickets collected, DVD orders confirmed......that is an average of 48 seconds per entrant! The professionalism of the event administration was second to none. The drive and energy of Promoter, Jason Woodforth, was the mast that sailed the contest. The event itself started on Thursday night with the Female and Male SportsModels judged and presented at the Opening Party. The following day, the Bikini Divas literally stopped traffic in the heart of Surfers Paradise with over 300 spectators cramming into Cavill Mall to watch the INBA beauties. All this was just entree to the greatest-show-on-earth, The 2009 INBA Natural Olympia contest on Saturday. 350 competitors rolled out 11 hours of top-end competition in a seamless, faultless, display of figure, fitness, physique and bodybuilding that was completed by 9PM. With a relaxed and happy celebration of the event following on Sunday, INBA booked SeaWorld resort for our own private Luncheon and Gala Presentations. Initial contest results are now online at inba.com.au and pictures available for viewing on INBA Australia facebook page.

The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) today welcomed the decision
of the International Natural Bodybuilding Association (INBA) to impose a two-year
sports ban on bodybuilder Scott Matthews for the presence and use of furosemide
(a diuretic). This two-year ban will be carried across all WADA compliant sporting
bodies. ASADA carried out an in-competition test on Mr Matthews on 3 May 2009
at the INBA Sydney Natural Physique titles. Furosemide is listed on the World
Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) 2009 Prohibited List as an S5 Diuretic and Masking
Agent and is prohibited both in and out-of-competition. On 4 September 2009
the INBA imposed a sanction of ineligibility on Mr Matthews for the doping violation.
Mr Matthews will be eligible to return to other sports on 4 September 2011.
However, INBA imposed a further ban of five-years and he is not eligible to
compete with INBA until 2014. Mr Matthews’ competition results from the 2009
INBA Sydney Natural Physique titles will be disqualified. For INBA competitors,
please note that INBA will forevermore treat a positive drug test for diuretics,
as using a “known bodybuilding drug”. This means under our Misconduct Rule,
future positive tests for a diuretic will incur a LIFE ban from competing with
INBA.

With a number of organizations and events that now surround INBA contests, we’d
like to remind you that NOVICE means never competed before. It must be your
first contest. If you have competed or will compete in another contest or with
another Federation before you compete with INBA you are not a Novice. INBA base
divisions on experience and Novice means ‘no experience’. The Intermediate division
is unique to INBA and this division is for competitors who have competed at
least once, but do not want to compete in the Open classes. ATTN: this year
competitors who place top 3 in either a Novice or Intermediate divisions at
any INBA contest are allowed to enter the Natural Olympia in the Open in their

not mean first contest - since you needed to qualify in an INBA Novice division

the 2009 Natural Olympia.....only three divisions were previously effected (Teenage,
Novice and Intermediate). However, it has proved too confusing that only a couple
of division are not included in the qualification. Therefore competitors who
qualify in these three divisions may enter the Natural Olympia too. Teenage
competitors qualify for the Natural Olympia Junior division and Novice and Intermediate
competitors can enter their height class in the Natural Olympia Open division.
Also please note the event time table has moved forward an hour. Show One starts
at 9AM and Show Two starts at 4PM. This was necessary because competitor numbers
are growing rapidly and also we all want to be sitting down at the After Party
for a meal at a resonable hour (9PM).

WADA drug policy and an additional Life ban from INBA for Misconduct. INBA considers
testing positive to a known bodybuilding drug (anabolic steroid in this case)

Daniel Exintaris, a player in the Queensland Rugby League (QRL) has received
a sanction for attempting to use clenbuterol in 2007. The sanction was imposed
last month (25 June 2009) by the Australian Rugby League (ARL) Drugs Tribunal
following an investigation conducted by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority
(ASADA). His sanction will apply across all WADA compliant sports until 7 January
2010. Mr Exintaris joined INBA in 2008 and will also be banned from competing
in any INBA events this year. This case is another example how INBA’s association
with ASADA and WADA extends the protection of natural bodybuilders beyond just
our drug testing program.

Investigation leads to Life Ban
Jun 28, 2009
The joint partnership of INBA and ASADA has brought a new level of protection
for our drug-free competitors and greater deterrence for drug cheats. INBA competitor
samples are analysised for 770 banned drugs including more than 70 anabolic
steroids in 2009. Plus, ASADA operate a Random Testing Program (RTP) incorporating
INBA Members. Moreover, our partnership with ASADA means intelligence gained
from Customs, State Police and Federal Police are provided to ASADA’s own Investigation
Unit to pursue cheats.
Recently an INBA Member was banned for possession and use of testosterone across
all WADA compliant sports for two years until 19 January 2011. In addition,
INBA has applied a further Life Ban under our Misconduct rule as INBA considers
the use of a known bodybuilding drug by an INBA Member as a gross violation.
Significantly the discovery did not come from a drug test but through information
supplied by the Victorian Police Force to ASADA. A search warrant was executed
on Mr Kapitan’s home by Victoria Police on 26 November 2007. Police searched
the premises and discovered six syringes containing testosterone in his refrigerator
as well as a container of used syringes in his bedroom. ASADA Chairman Richard
Ings said this case was significant as it relied on cooperation between ASADA
and the Victoria Police to detect a serious doping violation in INBA. “ASADA
investigators, working in close partnership with Victoria Police, identified
and established a serious doping offence without reliance on a positive doping
test,” Mr Ings said “This case further demonstrates the critical role that partnerships
between law enforcement agencies and ASADA play in fighting doping in sport.”

will perform the same compulsory poses as males bodybuilders including the front
lat spread. Note: Ms Figure competitors do not perform any lat spread pose.

Change to Intermediate Division
Jun 21, 2009
The definition for the Intermediate division changes in 2009. The intermediate
division is unique to INBA and designed as a stepping-stone before a competitor
needs to compete in the open division. Intermediate is designed to protect a
competitor from facing much better or experienced open competitors after competing
as a novice or if your competitive progress is not yet ready for the open class.
However, in 2009 INBA is restricting how long a competitor can stay in the intermediate
division. Enforced from this year, competitors who place in the top 3 at any
state title must compete in the open division the following year. For example,
those placing top 3 in the intermediate state division this year qualify to
compete in the intermediate division at this year’s Australian Titles, but must
move up to the open class in 2010 and onwards. Note: it is not compulsory to
compete in the intermediate class; you can move directly into the open.

Mixed
Pairs will be offered at this year’s INBA Australian Titles – it’s one of my
favourites and I think the audience love it too. Any INBA member can make up
a pair and compete. Judging will only be based on the routine – entertainent
an important factor. This will allow those Aussies interested in doing mixed
pairs at the Natural Olympia the opportunity to get some real stage time beforehand.
Note, for the Natural Olympia individual competitors can still form a team and
enter the mixed pairs; qualification by competing at the Australian Titles is
not required.

ASADA Registered Testing Program

Several
INBA competitors are on the ASADA Registered Testing Program (RTP). Those athletes
are required to provide accurate and timely whereabouts filing directly to ASADA
and that is due every three months. Today Friday June 12 is the cut-off day
for the next three months. An athlete's inclusion in the RTP is based on a number
of factors related to the athlete, level of competition, sport and ASADA's anti-doping
program requirements. ASADA's RTP is constantly reviewed and updated and athletes
can be notified for inclusion or removal on to the RTP at any time. Athletes
are required to nominate one location per day where they will be available for
sample collection and provide the start time of the one hour period that they
will be at that location. This one hour time slot must be between 6am and 11pm.
Locations nominated by athletes must be accessible to ASADA Doping Control Officials.

2008 three QLD competitors were banned after our drug testing. Jud Hart tested
positive for both Anastrozole (hormone antagonist) and Testosterone (anabolic
agent). He received a two year ban across all sports under our drug policy and
a life ban from INBA for Misconduct. INBA considers testing positive to multiple
banned substances as unacceptable. Gerard Broeren tested positive for Furosemide
(diuretic), Nandrolone (anabolic agent), and Testosterone (anabolic agent).
He received a two year ban across all sports under our drug policy and a life
ban from INBA for Misconduct. INBA considers testing positive to multiple banned
substances as unacceptable. Nathan Wallace tested positive for Oxilofrine (stimulant)
but successfully proved to ASADA that there was no intention to cheat or gain
a performance enhancement and only received a 3 month sanction that has already
been served and he is able to compete with INBA at any time. Further QLD adverse
results from 2008 are still to be finalised. Due to the high number of doping
breaches in QLD, the 2009 Brisbane Titles on 17 May was blitz-tested by ASADA
with 20 competitors randomly drug tested. The adverse outcome of these tests

INBA
is a WADA compliant organisation and doping penalties for those who fail a drug
test are stipulated in the WADA Code. You will typically see ASADA issue a media
release on their website outlining the WADA sanction against INBA athletes.
This penalty will be applied against the athlete across all sports that are
WADA compliant.
INBA may add an additional sanction under our Misconduct rule. Bodybuilding
is a unique sport being it offers competitors both drug-tested and non-tested
organizations (events) in which to participate. This is why INBA preempts its
identity with the word natural. Expectation in natural bodybuilding therefore,
is every competitor who participates in our contests has already considered
and chosen the ‘right’ organization and event. As such, a competitor who deliberately
dopes and by-passes a non-tested event to enter an INBA natural event has overstepped
a significant line. Confidence and assurance that our competitors are natural
is the cornerstone for the INBA and those failing to do the right thing may
also be sanctioned under the INBA Misconduct regulation. Hence, an INBA competitor
will be sanctioned for Misconduct, if they (1) refuse a drug test, (2) test
positive for a known bodybuilding drug (anabolic steroid etc.), or (3) multiple
banned substances are detected in their body. The Misconduct sanction applies
only to the competitor’s eligibility to compete with the INBA.

INBA deliver on Drug Testing
Jun 8, 2009
While
others make ridiculous claims about the presence and actual occurance of drug
testing at their events, INBA stands as a natural bodybuilding organisation
in Australia who spends tens of thousand of dollars annually and can deliver
proper and full drug testing. Only INBA competitors are truly protected by drug
testing. Don’t be fooled by lies about competitors been tested – peeing in a
plastic cup is not a drug test – drug testing occurs in a laboratory. And only
one laboratory in Australia can test for anabolic steroids – and that is ASADA.
If ASADA has not taken your sample then you have not been drug tested as you
expect. In an ASADA media release issued June 4 2009, ASADA confirmed that “The
INBA is the only Australian bodybuilding organisation to adopt and implement
the world’s best-practice anti-doping standards of the World Anti-Doping Code.”
ASADA Chairman Richard Ings, said, “By adopting the World Anti-Doping Code,
the INBA has demonstrated its commitment to a level playing field for competitors
at INBA-sanctioned competitions”. “ASADA calls upon Australia’s other bodybuilding
governing bodies to follow the leadership of the INBA in adopting and implementing
the World Anti-Doping Code” said Mr Ings. Further to the media release were
five positive test results from INBA events. Proof of comprehensive drug testing
occuring is not how many urine samples are taken, but how many positive samples
are actually detected?

With only 19 weeks until the 2009 Natural Olympia on the Gold Coast, amazingly,
a year that feels like it has only started, is now on the boil. And what an
exciting year for natural bodybuilders – who will shine? A totally new name
or will the established competitors go one step further? We have three competitors
taking on the best Americans at the PRO Natural Olympia; Clampit, Martin and
Waddington. Then we have the amateurs. Will Trevor Huni go one better at the
Natural Olympia in his home State? But first he will have to get past the likes
of Justin Firgaira who has now moved and is training in Melbourne with Alastair
White. Is Joel Ramintas preparing for a finally crack the Natural Olympia??
However, the condition of the new bloods who have won the City titles this year
is freaky and amongst the best I’ve seen. Is there a new star waiting to surprise?
And female stars this year? Plenty. INBA All Female Classic is around the corner
and is breaking all entry records. Will Lucy Hermans who grew in statue last
year by winning both the Natural Olympia and Universe prove that she has nailed
her awesome conditioning? Or is Elena Tsatsos who lost to Lucy at the Australia
by one sheer point last year hungrier? But then….you have Michelle Witomski
from Melbourne who has won three Open titles already in 2009 and no one underestimates
the quantity and quality that Queensland women produce every year. In fact,
the only thing you can be certain about is the Natural Olympia Tees now on sale
are a great looking item!

advocates in the U.S. today. I also had a very candid interview with Flex Wheeler.
We covered everything and this one will get everyone to take a step back and

to watch someone especially will not have to sit through the entire event. Judging
will remain the same, comprising of Round One (Symmetry) and Round Two (Muscularity)
and the judges results will be tabulated during the Top 3 optional free-posing
round. Due to record numbers in many divisions (24 in some divisions) only the
Top 3 placegetters will perform their routine – more time will be needed for

While the use of a designer steroid in amateur sport raises cheating to
a new level, for the INBA organization it is just another group of drugs
they are capable of detecting. INBA use the highest standard of drug detection
in the world (WADA) and an INBA competitor's urine sample undergoes testing
for 770 banned substances. Mr Salazar is yet another scalp to the INBA drug

Recently we conducted a Poll on the INBA website asking “How long should Round
3 Posing be?” 6o seconds, 45 seconds, 30 seconds or no posing routine at all.

Only a week after winning the 2008 Professional Natural OIympia in Greece, Philip Ricardo was posted to Iraq with the US military. The INBA recently received an email from Philip and it’s nice to know our reigning Champion is safe...and still winning awards. Friends and family, I am safe here in Iraq, and it is getting warmer everyday after a month of colder weather. I was promoted on February 1st to Master Sergeant, so it was an honor to pin on my new rank in Iraq. I hope everyone is well and I pray everyone has a safe 2008. Regards, Philip Ricardo Jr.

The Natural Universe Championships has changed weekends which will save Australian competitors @0 on their airfare to America. The Natural Universe will now be held the weekend after the Natural Olympia, on Saturday 15th November. The Natural Universe will be great way to end the competitive season, as a Competitors Party will be hosted at the Mansion of World President Denny Kakos the day after (Sunday 16th). The World President’s parties are best enjoyed when there is no contest insight! His property hosts a large outdoor cabana and dining area, swimming pool, commercial size gym, rotunda for live bands (Greek of course) and plenty of dancing space. (Note: Previously the Natural Universe was promoted on November 1st – same day that airfares to the USA drop due to a change of ‘flying seasons’.)

INBA Canberra & Country titles that previously clashed with Sydney has been moved forward a day to May 3.

In 2008 the INBA has removed an old regulation that prevented
competitors from competing out of the State they reside. The rule was based
on problems that don’t exist anymore - back in the 80’s when competitors travelled
around just to collect titles. With the rule removed competitors are able to
compete in several shows at the time they get ready. This year we have a competition
circuit that covers 4 shows over 4 weeks, starting in Melbourne ( April 26),
Canberra (May 3), Sydney (May 4) and finally Brisbane (May 17).
